Rice hulls are a great way to increase run off/sparge flow rate by aiding in creating a porous filter bed. Rice hulls can be added directly to the mash and contribute no flavor or color to the recipe. Rice hulls can be added to any all grain recipe for this purpose but it is highly recommended to use 0.5-1 pound in any mash that contains higher percentages (>10%) of adjuncts like flakes or when using wheat and rye malts.
At the best price around, adding rice hulls is the cheapest way to prevent the dreaded stuck sparge!
